Wearing a mouthguard is mandatory for all categories of players (juniors / seniors) during competitions organized by the association. The new measure is by entrance of the 2015-2016 hockey season in effect. Also advises the KNHB to include all hockey activities outside organized-competition wear. Mouth guard
KNHB pursues a policy aimed at promoting a healthy way of sports, to prevent injuries and to contribute to a proper treatment of injuries. The Medical Commission of the KNHB early 2014 a Taskforce ‘Preventing Dental Injuries’ by default. She was given the task of doing research on optimizing the prevention of dental injuries and formulate an opinion on the implementation of preventive measures at the Medical Commission of the KNHB.
The Taskforce ‘Preventing Tooth Injury’ under leadership of em. prof. Paul Wesselink, has researched their specific medical expertise to the consequences of it, or not wearing mouth guards. The conclusions of this report are supported by literature, inventories and own research, in which the various aspects of the research question are based. Much as possible on existing evidence
The incidence of mouth / tooth injury (2.46%) state sufficient reasons to believe that there is a real risk of this in hockey. to Already 85.2% of hockey players from the investigation wears a mouthguard and 69.6% believe that a mouthguard should be. Compulsory for hockey The percentage of hockey players from the Dutch teams that a mouth guard carries is 82% and 70% feel that mouth guards mandatory should be.
The survey conducted by the Taskforce shows that those with mouth / tooth injury, which wore at the time of the injury, foot protection, significantly fewer serious injuries than did those without a mouthguard. Research also shows that dentists are in favor of the use of a mouth guard in hockey. There is no doubt among professionals about the usefulness of a mouthguard. Wearing an individual by the dentist / Technician manufactured mouthguard is preferred by the Task Force.
The opinion of the Task Force to the Medical Commission has subsequently led to there opinion is delivered to the association executive KNHB . Based on this advice, the association executive decided to wear a mouth guard mandatory for all categories of hockey while playing organized matches in a competition. The implementation of the decision seems – including those based on information from various stakeholders – feasible
