Daniel Martin wins Tour of Lombardy – nrc.nl

The Irishman Daniel Martin won the Tour of Lombardy. The Spaniard Alexandro Valverde finished a second later during the 108th edition of the Tour. The Portuguese Rui Costa was third.

The Irish rider rode in the last major classic of the season in the final kilometer away from a group of favorites.

Pieter Weening also played a role in the final, but the Frisian was with his fellow breakaway Belgian Ben Hermans nabbed five kilometers from the finish. On the last climb a select few favorites remained without Dutch. In a bid to Martin just before the finish, everyone had the answer.

With his victory occurs Martin in the footsteps of his compatriot Sean Kelly, the “round of the falling leaves’ no less than three times won. For the 28-year-old Martin is the second major classic on his list. Last year he won Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Valverde grabs thanks to his second place in the leadership position for the World Tour. He takes the first place from Alberto Contador. The World Tour this month ended with the Tour of Beijing.
