Dafne Schippers (23) won the silver medal in the 100 meter sprint at the World Championships in Beijing. She is the first Dutch woman to have conquered a podium finish at this athletics section. The favorite Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the gold.
For the second time today Schippers improved Dutch record. She finished in 10.81 seconds, five hundredths after Fraser-Pryce. The American Tori Bowie was third with 10.86 seconds. Watch the race back here:
Fraser-Pryce is now the third time world champion in the 100 meter sprint. They thus equals her compatriot Usain Bolt. She also has been a two-time Olympic champion in the same distance.
The Jamaican Usian Bolt won yesterday for the third time in the World Cup final in the 100m for men.
Successful tournament For Boaters
In a straight line nudged Schippers this tournament through to the final. Sunday she won her heat in 11.01 and in the semifinals earlier today she sharpened Dutch record to 10.83. Even with that time she won her heat.
Schippers was the first ever Dutch who reached the World Cup final in the 100m. She was also the only European in the final.
Flourishing career
In May, she ran the first Dutch women’s 100 meters under 11 seconds (10.94). In late July, they did so on during the Diamond League in London in 10.92.
Last year Schippers won the 100 and 200 meter sprint at the European Championships in Zurich. In 2013 she took the first Dutch woman a World Cup medal in Moscow. She then won bronze in the heptathlon. The athletics World Championships in existence since 1983.
