AZ has positioned itself with the necessary effort for the eighth finals of the KNVB Cup. So did the Alkmaar with a 1-0 victory over Telstar, which in a packed house in the North Holland derby bravely fended off the Eredivisionist.
AZ had over 67 minutes to find the net in Velsen-Zuid, where the visit of the nearby Eredivisie club – between the properties of two professional clubs is not more than twenty kilometers away – had provided sparse packed grandstands. It was Joris van Overeem who Alkmaar to the fourth round of the KNVB Cup tournament lap.
With a low shot into the left corner signed the midfielder for the only goal of Alkmaar make, as he last weekend against Feyenoord (3-1 defeat) already did. This time his goal was good for the win, as the home side also struggling to find the net. Telstar proved a tough opponent for the team of coach John van den Brom, which spared no players for the cup match, and if by some small chances for Tarik Tissoudali hope for a goal. However, the skillful winger was the target not fearless enough to actually pull the trigger.
It’s something to tell from AZ striker Robert Mühren, who left in the 78th minute to the Alkmaar team from the penalty spot to shoot a safe margin. Cor varkevisser normally second choice under the crossbar at Telstar, turned his bet on the line and thereby kept the hope of a good result alive, but that hope proved vain after more than ninety minutes of play for the current number ten of the Jupiler League. AZ therefore placed himself as sixteenth and final team for the eighth finals.
