Kipyego completed the 42.195 kilometers in a time of two hours, six minutes and 18 seconds and was therefore four seconds faster than last year.

Behind the 29-year-old Kenyan came his countrymen Ezekiel Chebii and Mike Kigen second and third over the line in the Olympic Stadium.

Nageeye finished the marathon in a personal top time of 2:10:24 that met the limit for Olympic qualification, which is set at 2:11:00.

The old personal record of the 26-year-old Dutchman was at 2:11:33. The Nageeye born in Ethiopia could not compete with Dutch record of Kamiel Maase in 2007 (2:08:21).
