The 21-year-old Kulizhnikov who Sunday defends his title in the 500 meters, came in kilometers to a time of 1.08,33. Nuis drove in the final run 1.08,47.
The silver was Denis Yuskov. The Russian was narrowly faster than Nuis: 1.08,43. Aleksey Yesin was fourth (1.08,81). That meant that three Russians in the first four ended.
After Nuis was Kai Verbij, who rode against Kulizhnikov, seventh best Dutchman in 1.09,13. Olympic champion Stefan Groothuis appeared already in the third stage on the ice and with a time of 1.09,71 fourteenth.

Ter Mors
at the 500 meters in the women ran Ter Mors after her previous world title in the 1000 meter narrowly missing her second medals. In two rounds she finished fourth. She was 0.04 seconds short of the bronze.
The world was South Korean Sang-Hwa Lee, who was by far the fastest in both rounds with 37.42 and 37.43 respectively. The silver went to Brittany Bowe. The US was in her first ride even seventh, but suggested in the second round with 37.74 in order.
The Chinese Hong Zhang took the bronze. The Olympic champion in the 1000 meters was driving in her second ride exactly the same time as Ter Mors (37.90), but was in the first round four hundredths faster than the Dutch.
Heather Richardson, her title defended disappointed with fifth place. Margot Boer finished two races in eleventh. Jane Smith closed the 500 meter off the eighteenth
