Bernard Kipyego won Sunday for the second year in a row the Amsterdam Marathon. The 29-year-old Kenyan came into the Olympic Stadium on the measurement after 2u06: 19
.
His compatriot Ezekiel Chebii came in the fortieth edition in Amsterdam about a minute behind in second over the finish line. Mike Kigen, also from Kenya, was third.
Due to the cold and wet weather was a real fast time ever in there. Kipyego was four seconds faster than last year, when he was already well above the course record of 2h05: 36 remained. Halfway through the fastest runners were already twenty seconds over the passage of Wilson Chebet in 2013.
Kipyego placed at about 35 kilometers an accelerating pace, which initially could only be answered by Kigen. Kigen appeared however to have some overestimated its capabilities and was even passed by Chebii. Kipyego knew a final sprint to squeeze out that not only his victory but also resulted in an improvement of his personal record.
“The rain and low temperatures were not in my favor,” said Kipyego who was happy with his new personal record. “That’s very nice.”
The Kenyan Joyce Chepkirui was the fastest woman. The 27 year old runner completed the 42.195 km in 2u24: 11, a personal record. Chepkirui remained far removed from the course record, which since 2012 in the name of Meseret Hailu. The Ethiopian clocked a time when 2u21:. 09
