For the 28-year-old Safarova is the first time in eleven participations in Roland Garros them through to the last eight.

The cold seemed Sharapova in the second set while on his way to an escape. After being the first set via tiebreak had lost, the Russian came in the second act initially trailed 3-0 and then still fight back to 3-3. Safarova, however, finished the match at 5-4 still out on her second match point.

The 21-year-old Spanish, born in Venezuela, charged into the fourth round with the Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4. Last year had to bow Muguruza in the quarterfinals in Paris for Sharapova.
