Dumoulin escaped during his trial in a fall. The 24 year old Dutchman came quickly what a roundabout, landed on the sidewalk, but remained upright and sent away again without losing much speed.

That also was reflected in his end. For the 38.4 kilometer around Bern had Dumoulin 48.36 minutes to complete. Thus he was 19 seconds faster than home rider Fabian Cancellara, who at that time had the fastest time.

Spilak wins Tour

Simon Spilak set a time of 48.54 on the clock. That proved enough for the overall victory in the Tour of Switzerland. Geraint Thomas, fifth in the time trial, was second in the overall standings. Dumoulin completes respected stage 19 seconds behind the winner.

Robert Gesink had an excellent day. The leader of the LottoNL-Jumbo formation set the tenth fastest time. Thus he comes to the top ten in the overall ranking: ninth
