Additional ticket for Eredivisie Europa League thanks to fair play – nrc.nl

Netherlands may delegate this season an extra club for the Europa League. The Eredivisie won first place in the European fair play competition, which keeps the sportsmanship of national football leagues. Therefore, UEFA Netherlands gives an extra ticket for the first heat of the continental cup competition.

The national competition is fair play FC Twente sportiest club first. However, the club from Enschede thanked through chairman Aldo van der Laan for the European ticket because it is not financially feasible. FC Twente is in receivership by the KNVB.

The two numbers (PSV already qualified for Champions League), three (NEC plays in First Division) and four (Ajax, playing preliminary round CL) of the rankings are not eligible for the ticket. That means Excelsior (5th) and Go Ahead Eagles (6th) is currently the most likely to make the extra place. Extra spicy is that both clubs are currently relegation candidates, and so next year, both in the First Division and in the Europa League could come out. PEC Zwolle (8th) and Cambuur Leeuwarden (9th) also have a small chance.

In 2012, it was the last time that the Netherlands was granted an extra European place thanks to fair play. Then benefited FC Twente and the club won the group stage. This year, besides the Netherlands may also England (2nd) and Ireland (3rd) an additional club delegate.

The Europa League comprises three qualifying rounds and a play-off. Who survives four showdowns which flows through to the group stage. Netherlands normally allowed four clubs delegate to the Europa League. The cup winners, FC Groningen this year, will qualify directly for the group stage. The number three of the competition and the winner of the play-offs for European football may participate in the third heat. The number 2, Ajax this year, continues to play qualifiers for a place in the Champions League. Are those games lost, then place the club in Amsterdam for the group stage of the Europa League.
