The 23-year old Slovenian was the ride from La Spezia to Abetone ultimately the fastest of a five-man breakaway. The quintet had almost the whole day ahead drive and gave the accumulated lead to the foot of the final climb not go away.
Contador put on the climb to Abetone a vicious breakaway. He only gave Fabio Aru Astana and Richie Porte of Team Sky with it. The advantage of the Spaniard Tinkoff-Saxo at Clarke was enough for the lead in the standings to claim on.
The Australian Clarke, who took over the leader jersey Tuesday of his teammate Michael Matthews, had the final climb unloading from the pack as the favorites staged tempo.
In the standings Aru second behind Contador who won the Giro in 2008. Third place is for Porte. Roman Kreuziger, the Spaniard’s teammate at Saxo-Tinkoff, occupied fourth place. Gap with the wearer of the pink is 22 seconds

The fifth stage was initially relatively quiet. Five escapees already went after twenty kilometers away and took a maximum lead of about eleven minutes. Until the next five belonged Polanc the French Sylvain Chavanel (IAM) and Axel Domont (AG2R), the Swiss Silvan Dillier (BMC) and the Romanian Serghei Ţvetcov (Androni).
The focus of the trip was in The last kilometers of the climb in Abetone. At the foot of the seventeen kilometer long mountain range of the leaders of the pack was a little six minutes.
On the final climb, the lead group fell by several breakaways quickly apart. It was eventually Polanc who single-handedly managed to drive away with his four breakaway companions. He continued forward and took the stage win. Chavanel was second over the line. Aru won the sprint of the three favorites and finished third.
The peloton led by Astana especially uphill pace and it was too much for championship leader Clarke. He could not follow and had to let out a depleted squad. Not much later attacked Contador. Only Aru and Porte could follow
