The Italian was the last remaining rider of a large leading group. Simon Clarke of Orica-GreenEDGE was second for Yonathan Monsalve and took the pink jersey from his teammate Michael Matthews, who was released early.
Favorites Alberto Contador, Fabio Aru and Richie Porte also finished in the chasing group. The trio ran so incredibly early in the round on all the other classification riders. Rigoberto Uran and Jurgen Van den Broeck lost 42 count on the trio.
Steven Kruijswijk also belongs to the group of losers of the day. The leader of Lotto Jumbo was almost 8,5 minutes budge on the winner and came as 42nd on the line

The stage was burning early release by a leading group of about 25 riders which included Martijn Keizer Lotto-Jumbo and Pieter Weening of Orica-Green Edge. The group thinned in the tough stage further and further until Formolo on the final climb alone remained.
Behind rode the Astana team leader Aru the peloton to shreds on the final climbs. The Italian attacked in the last kilometers uphill himself and saw that could only follow Contador and Porte. Rigoberto Uran second in the last two editions of the Giro, had to adjust.
Giovanni Visconti and Amaël Moinard meanwhile tried to come Formolo, but were overtaken by the group of favorites. The winner, team-mate Tom Jelte Slagter at Cannondale Garmin ultimately held 22 seconds over the spacious 10-minute lead that had the group at one time

Aru was in the final sprint sixth, three places above Contador and Porte. Contador is there of the three favorites for the best in the standings with fourth place at 17 seconds of Clarke. Aru is fifth with a gap of 23 seconds, Porte is tenth on 37 counts. Johan Esteban Chaves, teammate Clarke, and Roman Kreuziger, teammate of Contador, are second and third.
Behind the first group was a true battlefield. Advance the ride was considered a hilly stage, but there was hurled minutes as if it was a tough mountain stage. Matthews, winner of the third stage Monday, came as reasonable climber for sprint concepts more than 20 minutes inside.
The peloton is again on Wednesday to await a tough stage from La Spezia to Abetone about 152 kilometers. The ride has in the beginning an uphill climb and finishes with a good uphill gradient. The stage is considered heavier than Tuesday
