AZ reached Europa League play-offs after a 2-1 victory at Istanbul Basaksehir – NU.nl

After the 2-0 victory at AZ in the first leg result was that more than enough for a place in the fourth qualifying round.

Markus Henriksen scored the opening goal in Turkey. Just before the break the home team equalized. Joris van Overeem lap fifteen minutes before the decisive 2-1 inside.

Coach John van den Brom started the return by the same team as last week in Alkmaar. On the bench was missing this time striker Aron Jóhannsson, which was sold to Werder Bremen.

Istanbul Basaksehir faced a difficult task and therefore began with attacking intentions in the competition. AZ was also briefly under pressure in the early stages but that did not lead to big opportunities.

AZ correctly took the lead in a mostly empty stadium. A corner from Dabney Dos Santos was bad uitverdedigd, then Henriksen after 21 minutes of play could tie up for the opening goal: 1-0. The Norwegian put as a crown on his hundredth official match for AZ

Four goals

That goal Henriksen AZ was moreover soon on roses. Istanbul Basaksehir had in fact need four goals to turn the Alkmaar.

However, the home team did not give up. Five minutes AZ escaped before halftime to level the score as Jop van der Linden a ball got unlucky on the tip of his shoe and thereby almost outwitted his own goalie. The ball finally hit the bar.

That 1-1 came in the first half yet. Doka Madureira completed a handsome loop action with a nice shot, which went in out of reach of Sergio Rochet.

After the break put Istanbul Basaksehir still on, which resulted in a ball on the pole via Sokol Cikalleshi.

AZ however, fared better with the chances and came fifteen minutes before again lead through Van Overeem. That victory came in the closing stages as in danger after Cikalleshi again hit the post, but it remained at 2-1.

The fourth qualifying round of the Europa League will be played on 20 and 27 August. AZ begins first Sunday of the new season in the Premier League with a home match against Ajax
