Van Gaal historically performs poorly with Manchester United – Voetbal International

More than a month ago, Manchester United are second after a 2-1 win at Watford, but since then it went completely wrong for the team of Louis van Gaal. By Boxing Day to lose 2-0 against Stoke City, equaled The Red Devils a dramatic series from 1961. Van Gaal’s team performs historically bad.

More than 54 years ago lost United in October and November also four times in a row. Which has since happened ever in one season. Only at the beginning of this century the powerhouse from Manchester a similar bad series, but then there was a summer break between the two defeats in May 2001 – when the club was already champion – and two losses in August later that year.

The lack of scoring ability seems to account for that historic collapse. The last five league matches United scored only three times. With an average of 1.22 goal per game but Van Gaal has made the least productive team since 1989/90. In that season, the men of the future success coach Sir Alex Ferguson just 1.21 goals per game.

Since then, United functioned never so difficult for the enemy goal. Why this season is so, the statistics flawlessly again. Van Gaal’s team does remarkably little with the possession of many (57.3 percent, the most of all the Premiership teams). Only Stoke City (198), Sunderland (197), Newcastle United (164) and West Bromwich Albion (156) fewer shots on goal than United (200).

As a result United after eighteen Premier League duels never had so few points as this season: 29. In the first year 1992/93 was the later champion at that time only 30. last ten years performed only Van Gaals predecessor David Moyes similar bad. The Scot was two years back in seventh with 31 points. There is work to be done for Van Gaal; if he then gets.
