Hein Otterspeer state midway through the second World Cup sprint behind the big favorite Pavel Koelizjnikov. The Dutchman won Saturday in Astana the 1000 meters and therefore climbed significantly in the rankings.
Otterspeer 1.08,93 drove the mile and exchanged as the tenth place in the rankings for the second. The Dutch champion has to Sunday on the second 500 meters 0.43 seconds to make up on Koelizjnikov.
The Russian won earlier in the day the 500 meters in a course record of 34.56 and clinched more than half a second Otterspeer (35,08). On the double distance Koelizjnikov came with 1.09,11 no further than bronze, behind the German Nico Ihle (1.09,10).
Michel Mulder grabbed silver in the 500 meters (35.84), but the defending champion dropped by a tenth on the kilometer (1.10,02) into fifth place in the standings. The double world champion will have the second 500 meters 0.74 seconds to catch up Koelizjnikov.
The difference with the stage is about to see a lot more for Mulder. Ihle, the number seven of the 500 meters, is provisionally bronze with a quarter count ahead of the Dutchman

Pim Schipper finished fourteenth in the 500 meters (35.36) and clocked the shared sixth time in the 1,000 meters (1.09,67) . The 26-year-old North Hollander is halfway through his second World Cup sprint ninth in the standings, just behind Shani Davis.
