The 30-year-old rider from BMC calculated in the sprint with Slovak Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo). The Belgian Tiesj Benoot Lotto Soudal completed the podium in Flanders.
The trio was part of a leading group of five, which also consisted of the Briton Luke Rowe (Team Sky) and Frenchman Alexis Gougeard (AG2R ).
Kai Reus escaped early in the race with some other riders from the peloton and long remained a part of a leading group. The 30-year-old Dutchman drove 30 kilometers before the finish leak and should therefore be let go five remaining breakaway companions.
After they defied the cobbles of the Lange Munte, Van Avermaet knew Sagan, Benoot , Rowe and Gougeard the approaching squad narrowly behind adhere towards the finish in Ghent.

World Champion Lizzie Armitstead won Saturday with the women. British, playing for the Dutch team Boels-Dolmans, only arrived in Ghent. The Dutch Chantal Blaak won the bunch sprint for second place, for the Australian Tiffany Cromwell.
Armitstead continued her attack 13 kilometers before the finish. Before, among others Lucinda Brand and Swedish Emma Johansson tried to get away from a leading group.
Later joined a group in which two, among whom Anna van der Breggen, the winner of last year, Armitstead, Amy Pieters and Annemiek van Vleuten.
After the weather had come to an amalgamation Armitstead found the right time to jump. She at first did with Gracie Elvin, but the Australian could not follow the pace. After two third places in a row was for Armitstead profits in Ghent
