A statement by a Saudi cleric has caused great debate in the Arab world. In a film that goes around on YouTube says the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia that Islam chess rejects because it is a waste of time and leads to rivalry and conflict among the players.
Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh answered questions in a television program in which he fatwas, Islamic legal opinions pronounce as answers to everyday questions from viewers. The man decided that chess is covered by gambling and that it is a waste of time and money and a source of hatred and animosity between players.
The Grand Mufti refers to the Qur’an in which gambling, narcotics and idolatry be banned. According to the mufti also leads chess to a waste of money because it makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Arab twitterers discuss the religious motivation of the Saudi cleric. He would simply prohibit chess because it is an intelligent game. Others give Al-Sheikh same and say that chess can be addictive and people distract from daily prayers.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, it is unlikely that a Saudi law does that chess is prohibited. It will come earlier in the list of things like music, where the clergy have an aversion. It is more a recommendation than an official ban.
After the Islamic revolution in Iran was also banned chess there, because it was seen as a gamble. Ayatollah Khomeini was Rouhoullah chess however far back as 1988, provided that there is no gambling on the game.
