Williams pulls score level against Kerber in final Australian Open – NU.nl

The 28-year-old German was playing only her first Grand Slam final, but switched after two hours as the winner of the track in Melbourne: 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

. In the first set had Kerber, the number seven of the placement list, some forty minutes is required against its US opponente to twice its service gave away and there is only one break opposite said.

Williams rallied then and brought the score again. In the third and deciding set went Kerber energetic start to break through the defending champion, but the American fought itself quickly back to 2-2.

After both players made a real shocker of the Australian hardcourt, with Kerber grateful initially benefited from the mistakes of six-time winner Williams, who scored no less than 46 unforced errors throughout the match.

The left-handed Kerber took a 5-2 lead, but saw the 34-year US come back to 5-4. On her first match point hit the German far, however: 6-4

The German reached until this year never been beyond the fourth round at the Australian Open. In the run-up to the finals won Kerber Misaki Doi (who did not know to use a match point), Alexandra Dulgheru, Madison Brengle, Annika Beck, Victoria Azarenka and Johanna Konta.

Williams, last year’s best at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, attributed the Grand Slam tournament in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2015 on its impressive record.

Kerber is the first German winner of the Australian Open since Steffi Graf in 1994. Williams (21) failed to terms of Grand Slam titles to catch up with Graf (22)
