Right from the start there was plenty attacked. A large group, with Steven Kruijswijk and Stef Clement, took a lead, but the adventure did not last long.
From the group of favorites demarreerden Vincenzo Nibali, Alejandro Valverde and Alberto Contador after other classification riders hole close reason. Only Geraint Thomas could not come.
In the downhill and the valley to the Col de la Croix de Fer got almost everything back together and took LottoNL-jumbo in control. Among others Laurens ten Dam set the pace.
When Chris Froome after wrong turn as a foothold had to put Nibali chose again the attack. This time with more success. The defending champion hit a hole with the group including Robert Gesink, Bauke Mollema, Wout Poels and Kruijswijk.
While Nibali on the final climb went to La Toussuire on his way to the stage victory, Quintana leaped away from his competitors . The Colombian shook Froome from him and thus took some seconds back.
solo Nibali crossed the line and make a giant leap in the top 10. Quintana was 43 seconds later, the number two, Froome lost half a minute on his closest pursuer. Gesink again impressed
