Dumoulin takes lead in Vuelta ‘great’ after disappointing Tour – NU.nl

De Limburger Giant-Alpecin took the leader’s jersey Wednesday after the fifth stage of the Colombian Esteban Chaves and did not even initially.

“I was already on my way to the bus when I heard that I was the new leader, “said a surprised Dumoulin. “It was not my goal to catch the red today.”

“My mission was to help John Degenkolb in the sprint. That did not work, so I was initially a bit pissed off at the finish” he meant the second place from his teammate behind stage winner Caleb Ewan. “But now I’m here.”

Dumoulin is the first Dutch leader in a large round since Bauke Mollema, who was in 2011 the lead in the Tour of Spain

According to Dumoulin has his performance a special touch because he earlier this year went out early in the Tour de France with a view on the yellow jersey. “I really enjoy it. After my crash in the Tour is great to wear this jersey.”

“It is a great surprise, and I want that sweater defend as long as possible. I’m going to not lose without a fight “
