“Offended” Italians do not vote for Golden Ball – Voetbal International

Italy this year has abstain from voting for the Golden Ball. According to Italian media, this decision was taken because Gianluigi Buffon was not nominated for the prestigious award.

The 37-year-old Buffon is still invaluable for Juventus and the national team of Italy. Despite the name of the goalie failed on the list of 49 names who were eligible to win the Golden Ball, the award for the best footballer in the world.

The Italian Football was so offended by passing Buffon that a positive decision would be the coach (Antonio Conte) and the captain of the national team (Buffon) not to vote. Italy eventually brought indeed no votes, but the association has not been confirmed whether the absence of Buffon on the shortlist of 49 names is the reason for this decision.

Monday Lionel Messi was voted the winner of the Golden Ball. Cristiano Ronaldo finished in second place, Neymar was third.
