Italian police have arrested fifty people suspected of match fixing in the lower divisions of Italian football. In some cases, the mafia would be involved.

The group of suspects consists of football players, coaches, managers and club presidents, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. In total there are thirty clubs from the third, fourth and fifth division. There is also involved a police officer, according to the prosecutor. In addition, seventy persons investigated for possible involvement in match fixing. Five suspects are still at large.

The research is led by a research team that is engaged in anti-mafia cases and came came to light after an investigation in the southern city of Catan Zero to the ‘Ndrangheta, which the Calabrian branch the Mafia. The arrests were carried out across the country.

It is not yet clear whether this case is related to a previous match-fixing scandal in 2011. Then there were over a hundred people examined by the judiciary because of manipulation of matches in Serie B.
