Meucci impressive solo for gold at marathon – Volkskrant

The Italian sprinter Daniele Meucci has captured the European title in the marathon in an impressive manner. The 28-year-old athlete soloist in Zurich for the gold in a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 8 seconds.

The Italian waited 30 kilometers and then began to gear with the selective course. He walked away from the large group and passed the early breakaway Polish Marcin Chabowksi after 35 kilometers. The Pool Yared Shegumo ran over 50 seconds behind Meucci to the silver in 2:12:00. The Russian Alexei Rejoenkov took the bronze in 2:12:15. The 39-year-old Swiss defender Viktor Röthlin ended in his last marathon fifth in 2:13:07,

The marathon gold is Meucci’s greatest success. He won already medals in the 10,000 meters; bronze at the European Championships in 2010 and two years later silver. In Zurich, he finished sixth in the final of the 10,000 meters. The 2:11:08 was a personal best for the runner from Pisa.

The Dutch marathoners played no significant role. Koen Raymaekers tried to go in the first group at the beginning of the match over 42,195 kilometers, but he dropped out after after 10 kilometers and then fell even further behind. He arrived as the best Dutch disappointing 31st place in 2:20:49. Olfert Molenhuis finished 36th in 2:22:45 and Ronald Schroer was 42nd in 2:24:51.

Hugo van den Broek, the fourth man from the Dutch marathon team, decided not to start as a precaution. He had suffered from a leg injury.
