The Kenyan Dennis Kimetto on Sunday at the Berlin Marathon breached a magical boundary.
The 30 year old athlete crossed the finish line in a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds. He is the first to 42 kilometers and 195 meters below the 2 hours and 3 minutes has been running.
The old top time was held by his compatriot Wilson Kipsang, who last year in Berlin to a time of 2:03:23 came. “” I had seen the route between times, so I suspected that there was a world record in it, ‘said Kimetto.
Kimetto was part of a seven-man breakaway. Four kilometers from the finish line, he shook his compatriot Emmanuel Mutai last, after which he went up to the new stop time at a steady pace. Behind the untouchable Kimetto Mutai was second over the finish line.
He was 2:03:13 faster than the old top time of Kipsang. The Ethiopian Abera Kuma (2:05:56) finished on the fast track third.
In the women was won by the Ethopische Tirfi Tsegaye. She was 2:20:18 just a bit faster than her compatriot Feyse Tadese (2:20:27).
The third place was for the American Shalane Flanagan, who passed the test after 2:21:14.
