Dutch yacht Team Brunel wins second stage Ocean Race – NUsport.nl

The Dutch yacht Team Brunel Saturday won the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. Boat skipper Bouwe Bekking kept off the coast of Abu Dhabi just enough ahead of the Chinese boat Dongfeng.

In addition Bekking makes Gerd-Jan Poortman part of the crew on board Brunel. Stefan Coppers is the onboard reporter.

The sailors began almost a month ago from the South African Cape Town for the second leg in the journey around the world. Last week Team Brunel was almost constantly in the lead, but Dongfeng was never far away. Chinese boat took in the final phase of the 11,000 kilometer stage even as the lead. Bekking knew his boat still beyond Dongfeng sail and came first to the finish line.

The difference in the finish with the Chinese boat, with the French skipper Charles Caudrelier eventually was 16 minutes and 20 seconds.

The second stage was one dropout. The Danish team Vestas feed on a reef and could not continue the fight.

Team Brunel ended in the first leg, from Alicante to Cape Town, third. That race was won by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, which will finish third in the home. Dongfeng was in the first leg even though second.

The three boats then go into some points together on top of the standings, but is led by Brunel and Abu Dhabi because they have won a race.

The gap with the three other boats that sail was still Saturday more than 100 nautical miles. SCA team, carrying Carolyn Brouwer, is set away last
